HP Chip Updates April 2019 – Affects HP905 and HP955

The latest HP chip updates affect HP printers that take the HP905XL and HP955XL cartridges.  Printers impacted include HP Officejet Pro 6950, Officejet Pro 6960 and Officejet Pro 6970.  The HP Officejet Pro 8710, Officejet Pro 8720, Officejet Pro 8730, Officejet Pro 8740 are also affected.

On April 16th an automatic update was issued to these printers which meant compatible cartridges were no longer recoginised by the printer.  You will most likely get an error message stating “One or more cartridges appear to be damaged”.  There is no way to fix this problem.  Because of the update the cartridges you currently have will no longer work in the printer.

Replacement Cartridges Now Available

While HP knows ahead of time that these updates will occur and can program their cartridges accordingly, we can only respond when the changes are made. The good news is our manufacturer has updated cartridges available and we expect these to arrive this week.

If you have received HP905 or HP955 cartridges from Affordable Ink and are having problems caused by the HP chip updates, please contact us so we can arrange replacements for you.

Disable Future HP Chip Updates

To avoid future issues never accept any updates on the printer.  If a message appears on the printer display requesting permission to update, say NO.  The main purpose of these updates is to prevent you using compatible cartridges.  If you didn’t allow the printer to update the firmware or drivers then automatic updates are enabled.  These can be disabled by following the instructions at the link below.
